Hello fellow readers, hope you are all having an amazing day! The sun is shining here today, but it’s still so cold so I’m enjoying the sunshine from the inside. Let’s take a minute and talk about public enemy #1…SUGAR! I don’t care who you are, what diet your doing, or what your health status is. Sugar is not your friend, and it never will be.
Sugar hides in so many forms and names that it is often difficult to determine if your consuming it or not. Rule #1 if it’s not a whole healthy food assume there is sugar involved. So you flip over the package start reading ingredients and you don’t see the word sugar, your safe right? WRONG! Sugar has over 61 different names and while some are obvious some are not. You can do a quick internet search and find a complete list, but I want to just give you a few.
Dextrose, fructose (yes fruit has sugar), galactose, glucose, lactose, maltose….see a trend here they all end in -ose. Stay away from these. Dextrin, maltodextrin, glucomalt….these are also sugar! Now for the ones that I hate the most because marketing pushes these to make us feel they are okay. Coconut sugar, turbinado, raw sugar, cane sugar, beet sugar, palm sugar! All derived from plants, but all still sugar! These are just as bad as granulated sugar, brown sugar, honey, molasses, etc. As you can see sugar has a lot of different names it hides under.
So what are the effects that sugar really has on your body. You eat it you get a burst of energy, your body burns it, and then you crash because your body wants more to burn. So other than this endless cycle of pain sugar has some really bad side effects on your body. One of the biggest effects is obesity and diabetes. These two diseases are out of control here in the US. Secondly sugar is a fuel source for cancer, no sugar for the cancer cells to eat better chance of no cancer. If those three things are not enough to sway you from considering sugar elimination how about this list: headaches, migraines, depression, anxiety, constipation, aging, hormonal imbalance, decreased immunity and urinary function decline. This isn’t a complete list!
Now you can see where sugar is hiding and what it may be doing to your body, but now heed my warning that cutting sugar is not as simple as you think. Sugar is highly addictive to our body. So when you decide to stop consuming sugar in all it’s forms your body is going to hate you and rebel against you. When I detoxed from sugar it was one week solid of pure hell! Headaches, nausea, cravings, bloating, diarrhea, chills, aches, pains, irritation, lack of energy, anxiety, and depression. I went through every single one of those! The more sugar in your daily diet the worse the detox will be, but in the end it is more than worth it. Days 1-5 are awful! When you reach day 6 you see the lights at the end of the tunnel. By day 10 your actually using fat for fuel and you start to get clarity. So the battle is won right? WRONG! It takes a minimum of 21 days to fully kick an old habit and make a new one, and believe me sugar will tempt you from every single angle until you break that habit for good.
There are several things you can do to ease the detox and I highly recommend them. Hydrate!!!!!!!! I can not emphasize this one enough. Drink as much water as you can to flush your system. Now since your increasing water you also need to make sure you have electrolytes on board. Stay away from any sugar including artificial sweeteners for at least 21 days. This can be triggers to crave sugar in any form. Get up and move! You may feel like crap but exercising will help. Trust me you will feel great once sugar is no longer holding onto you and controlling your body or life.
I have been sugar free for 10 months and haven’t consumed any sugar alcohols in 2 months. It is a great feeling to know that my body is running on great nutrients and not being fueled by a controlling substance. Until next time Keep Ketoing On!
